After the
official death of Toshiba's HD DVD format, Microsoft is clearing up the HD era in Windows OS. The company until recently supported HD DVD as a native HD format for its windows machines but things are about to change since HD DVD is already part of history.
Microsoft is working to a soon to be release driver that will give Windows native support for Sony's Blu-Ray HD format.
"We've already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like," said Ballmer, speaking at the Microsoft's Mix '08 conference. Ballmer also said that Microsoft is "going to support Blu-ray in ways that are important," according to a transcript of his remarks posted on the company's Web site.
